Alice, shipmate: getting to know myself at sea

Alice Cherki from France embarked at Douarnenez and joined the transatlantic voyage to Colombia as a shipmate. She wrote down her thoughts about the traineeship and her experience on board.

“I’m really thrilled to be part of the Kaap Kargo team. I have sailed before, but not on a big ship like Ide Min (she is always the biggest in the marina!) and not for such an extensive period of time. I couldn’t expect more from this trip to improve my knowledge of sailing, and next to that, meet caring people to share my passion for the sea with (and advice to keep going during hard days of sailing).

The first week was really exhausting, mainly because of the night watches. I fought to stay awake. One of the solutions I found to stay awake was to keep myself occupied by making a lot of wooden spoons for my family and friends. This way I kept busy and at the same time I had my loved ones I miss in my thoughts.

Sometimes I can still be really confused on the ship. The challenge is to remember the place and function of the ropes that all look the same.

To make a long story short, I got to know myself more than ever in just a few months. Both my body and spirit are empowered a lot. Living with less comfort but surrounded by beautiful landscapes, I can say now that I’m proud and so grateful.“
